Hope everyone had a great Mothers Day weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect. Not a whole lot to report this week as we are winding down the year. Just really the same as every year, we are looking for hours, reports all expense reports need to be turned in as soon as possible. We will be meeting on Tuesday at the CAC please see announcements below for more information. We will have an unusually busy meeting for May. We will be installing new members and have numerous proposed projects. We worked hard to spend all the funds allocated for the year. I want to send out a BIG THANK you for all the Board Members, Project Chairs, Taste Chair and Committee Chairs, ASTRA Sponsors, Membership and Communication, Scholarship Committees for all the hours of hard work that have led to a very productive and successful year. Even with a little down time with COVID-19 we have found a way to continue record volunteer hours and conduct business the best way possible. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
I have been so busy with work and mask making that I’m just now seeing this email… I’m terribly sorry about that.
I started the process of mask making early on and was even able to score a spool of 288 yards of elastic from eBay before it became almost impossible to find. Hooray! My efforts started out small with a little help from my next-door neighbor (bridgett, the owner of extreme cheer and tumble) and then really grew when my other neighbor, Altrusan Barbara Pearcy, started helping by washing the fabric and cutting it out. Once the story hit the Temple Daily Telegram, I’ve had two ladies in temple begin to make masks. Others, including Altrusan Kelly Nicks, have contributed fabric to me… It has saved me much time to have people wash and prepare the fabric, including cutting out the pieces needed to make the masks. A special thanks goes to Monica of Custom Draperies in Belton as she allowed me to work in her studio all last week where there are tall tables that don’t break your back while you are working, LOL! My husband, Jeff, has been super supportive in every part of the effort with the exception of sitting at the sewing machine. As of today I have over 500 outstanding request for masks in the healthcare community… Those working outside of first responders and the hospital.
When I first learned about the progression of the pandemic, I was so concerned and had no idea what I could do to help at all. Very quickly, Days for Girls encouraged us to switch to making face masks, rather than menstrual hygiene kits.
At first there was a learning curve, trying out various patterns and getting input from health care professionals. I have made over a hundred now, and I am now a little more proficient.
Brenda Hill has been an asset to a group of us making masks, as she takes requests and arranges pick up & delivery.
Masks have gone to S&W, McLane Children’s, several nursing homes, assisted livings & Bell County Health Dept.
It feels good to play even a small part in addressing this enormous problem.
Stay safe, Altrusans
BRENDA HILL
I got involved with this project after speaking to Susan Cory. She was making masks along with several of the people involved with Days for Girls. She asked me if I would help coordinate the requests, so that the people sewing could just concentrate on that. I set up a Facebook page (Mask Makers of Central Texas) where we receive requests. We have fulfilled many requests throughout the area - Scott & White, Home Instead Senior Care, Compassus Hospice, St. David's ICU and others. I don't know how many masks have been made, because several people in the group have gotten the requests themselves and have filled them.
I've probably spent at least 30 hours on this project so far, maybe more. I've still got more masks to make myself.
Let me know if you have any questions.

First of all, I've been catching up on "to do" stuff like cutting up a bunch of flannel that's been sitting here way too long, am about to cut up a bunch of PUL for transport bags which has also been sitting here, did major landscaping job in the backyard, and have just cut some masks which I'll begin to sew tomorrow. I've ventured out twice for groceries, and oh yes, wrote a newsletter on publisher for another organization I belong to. No time to be bored so far.

With our efforts to stay safe at home remember to keep collecting tabs.
All our Tabs were turned into Ronald McDonald house in early March the collection was a total of 13 pounds which was awesome.
Changes to our tab collection efforts and criteria:
Wine screw tops are not allowed. :-( While the screw tops are soft metal the plastic rings and vinyl liner in the screw tops are not acceptable.
To use lids with tabs from soup cans and tuna cans the entire lid has to be all aluminum. If you can pick up a can lid w tab with a magnets then the lid is not all aluminum thus can't be collected.
